A driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10 or greater is seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash than is a driver who has not consumed alcoholic beverages, and a driver with an alcohol concentration of 0.15 or greater is about 25 times more likely Drivers with a high blood alcohol content, (BAC) and repeat offenders make up a disproportionate share of drunk drivers. In 2007, nearly seven out of ten drivers involved in an alcohol-impaired fatal crash had a BAC of .15 or above and these drivers were nine times more likely than a non-drinking driver to have a prior conviction for DWI. Despite all risks, people will still get behind the wheel of their vehicles while intoxicated. As a result the certainty of highway deaths due to alcohol impaired drivers is predictable. Motor vehicle wrecks are the leading cause of death in the United States for persons under age 24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Reports, of those deaths, more than 40 percent are alcohol-related.
