Brain Injury & Trauma
|
Traumatic brain injury also called intracranial injury, or TBI occurs when an outside force is applied to the skull and traumatically injures the brain. TBI can be classified based on the severity of injury, the nature of the injury, whether it is a closed or penetrating type head injury, and whether it is limited to a specific location or over a widespread area. TBI is a significant cause of death and disability, especially in children and young adults. Causes of traumatic brain injury include slip and fall, and car accidents, as well as intentional injury or battery, and a variety of other accidents that result of force being applied to the skull. What Causes Brain TraumaBrain trauma can be caused by a direct impact or by acceleration alone. In addition to the damage caused at the moment of injury, brain trauma causes secondary injury, that may take place in the minutes and days following the injury. These processes, which include alterations in cerebral blood flow and the pressure within the skull, contribute substantially to the damage from the initial injury. TBI may cause physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral effects, which can range from complete recovery to permanent disability or death . Diagnosis and treatment include imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Depending on the injury, treatment may be minimal or may include medications and emergency surgery. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy are often necessary for rehabilitation. When should I contact a Brain Injury Attorney? If you are injured in an automobile accident, it is imperative that you seek prompt medical attention for any type of head injury. Prompt intervention by qualified specialists may prevent secondary injury, that may take place in the minutes and days following the injury.
